It was on my stand, when I realized that being a lifeguard is a like being a superhero. Now some folks have accused me of having a rather large ego at times but in this case, as with deciding that the giant soap bottle in Chemistry looked like a penguin, after thinking about the issue they will decided that I have a valid point.
So why a Lifeguard is a SuperHero.
1. We have superhero costumes. A superhero must have a brightly colored spandex suit with mask. If you are female it must be revealing and if you are male it must show off all of your muscles. I believe a swimsuit falls within those guidelines. No while we don't wear a mask persay, sunglasses can be highly effective in hiding your face and your emotions.
2. No one knows who you are when you do a costume change. When lifeguards go either on or off shift and have the costume change it is amazing how people will recognize us at the pool but not in real life or vice versa. Yes there are people that can see who we are in both persona's, but that is just like in the comics when a person figures out the superhero's alternative idenitity.
3. Next as a lifeguard just like a superhero you stand above the crowd just waiting for someone who needs your help.
4. Just like the League of Justice, Lifeguards form certain circles of friends that are just other lifeguards.
5. Like any superhero, we have to deal with the lowlife scum, who while not a real danger to the people around them insist on breaking the rules and being a general bother.
So enjoy the water this summer and obey the superhero's who guard it.
